Tanagers, Grosbeaks, amd Buntings (10)
Summer Tanager *
An uncommon summer resident, April - September, of pine woods and a rare
fall migrant.You can expect less than 6 per day during breeding season.

Scarlet Tanager *
A rare fall migrant in October at SCP, usually 2 to 4 sightings per
season. Tanagers plumages are rarely red in the fall but their dark wings help to separate them from other species.

Western Tanager
This tanager is almost never seen in Florida. We have one record of a bird that was seen at a feeder in Lakeland in 2009.
Dickcissel
A rare visitor that was first found in 1993 in Eagle Lake. A bird was seen coming to a feeder in Lakeland, January 2003 and most recentely one was reported from the Circle B Bar reserve near Lakeland in 2010.

Rose-breasted Grosbeak
An uncommon fall migrant in October at SCP and other forested areas.
Early date 25 August 1990. Only a couple a day may be recorded.

Black-headed Grosbeak
This bird is rarely seen in Florida. We have one record from near Lakeland with several good pictures. It was discovered coming to a feeder from late February to early March 2009.
Northern Cardinal *
A common resident spread throughout the region. Some fall days up to
40 can be counted at SCP. The LCBC high count of 186 was in 1973.

Blue Grosbeak *
A very uncommon summer resident, April - September, seen mostly in the Green
Swamp.

Indigo Bunting *
A rare breeding bird and uncommon migrant found thinly scattered throughout
the region. Most commonly seen during October in migration when up to
a dozen may be found. The maximum count was 19 in early November 1997. The
LCBC high count of 43 was in 1975.

Painted Bunting
An uncommon winter visitor, October - March, many times found at bird
feeders. The LCBC high count of 4 was in 1996.
