Wood Stork *
A common permanent resident of wetlands and pits. Declining slowly in
number but groups of 400 still can be seen. Storks are colonial nesters. Lake John in Lakeland hosts about 200 nesting pairs during the summer of 2009. A high count
of 625 was taken in late August 1997. The LCBC high count of 1,955 was in 1980. (E)
American Flamingo
Possibly an escape, one was seen on a nearly dry Lake Hancock in the 1960s. Other sightings from the PPM later on were probably exotic birds also.
