Short-eared Owl
One record from the Avon Park Bombing Range in June 2009.

Eastern Screech Owl *
A fairly common resident throughout the region usually found close to human
structures. They respond well to owl call tapes, and a half dozen may be
heard in a few minutes in prime locations. The LCBC high count of 18 was in
1974.

Great Horned Owl *
An uncommon resident of pinelands of the County. They sometimes occupy empty nests
of osprey and eagles in late winter and spring. In Feburary 2002, ten
nests were located on the crossbars of large electric pylons in the
PPMs. The LCBC high count of 14 was in 1967.

Barred Owl *
A fairly common resident of forested wetlands throughout the county.
The Circle B Bar reserve is a good place to see these owls. The LCBC high count of 19 was in 2010.

Burrowing Owl *
A rare resident of open country and pastures, formerly more common. Sadly, these charming little owls are almost gone from Polk County.
The LCBC high count of 2 was in 1969. (SSC)
