Colt Creek State Park

Colt Creek State Park is the newest State Park in Polk County, open in 2007, and lies on the Sumter County border in north Polk. This 5,067 acre reserve is a key part of the mammoth 110,000 acre Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve. Formerly a cattle ranch, today it is a great example of how Polk County looked in the early 1900’s with vast wilderness stretching out in all directions. Colt Creek has one of the largest stands of Long-leaf Pine left in the County and is laced with numerous small streams and a few larger lakes. The trail system is new and the facilities are just being constructed but it is a wonderful spot to explore by foot. Most of the Green Swamp bird specialists nest here. This is a good place to see Bachman’s Sparrow and Yellow-throated Vireo in the spring and summer. There is a small fee to enter
